Skin Biopsies and Flap/Graft Repairs

Skin Biopsies are basically the medical procedures conducted to test your skin and curb the possibility of potential diseases, infections, or cancers. At Batemans Bay Medical & Skin Centre, we can perform these in several ways, such as shaving or scraping smaller lesions or making an incision in the larger ones. If your biopsy results show that your lesion is cancerous, we will perform surgery on it or re-excision to separate the skin around the tumour. After that is completed, you will require a follow-up procedure like Flap/Graft Repairs to help the injury close and repair.

If you require a skin biopsy to suppress the possible skin diseases or cancers, contact Batemans Bay Medical Centre right away, and our caring team will gladly assist you.

Doctors need to cover that skin incision to heal quickly after a skin procedure is done and the cancerous lesion is removed successfully. Such methods are known as Flap/Graft Repairs, and this minor surgery involves removal of the skin from a distinct area of the body and attaching it to the wound. Let us explain these two methods in detail:

Flap Repairs

These procedures are performed when the excised wound (post a skin procedure) is too big to be closed simply by stitching it up. As its name suggests, the method involves taking a part of the adjacent skin, which becomes the “flap,” and using it to cover the removal area. The flap enables your skin to preserve its natural form and speeds up the recovery process as the blood flow in that area is maintained. We can do many Flap/Graft Repairs procedures on your wound based on your skin condition and the location and size of the incision. For example, a specific rotation flap is twisted at a pivot point near the neighbouring defect, while an interpolation flap is completed in two steps.

Skin Graft

Skin grafts, a.k.a. Graft Repairs, on the other hand, are arranged when a flap repair is not recommended. In this method, the dermis is removed from a different body area and placed in the area where we removed the lesion. It is usually done for large open wounds, deep burns, and other similar skin conditions that leave the injury too significant to be stitched. There are two main types of Grafts Repairs, namely full-thickness skin grafts and split-skin grafts. The first type involves removing all the layers of the donor area, including the epidermis and dermis. The stripped skin will then be cast into the right shape and placed on the wound area.
On the other hand, the second type involves scrapping off the surface or top layers of the dermis and applying this to the wound area. It is often taken from the abdomen, thigh, or back and covers larger areas. Compared to the split graft, the full-thickness graft is performed on smaller wounds and more visible body parts like the face. It also tends to have a more significant cosmetic effect since the graft blends better with the skin.
