Fracture and Sprain Management: Cast and Straps

Many of us find it challenging to tell whether we are suffering from a Fracture or a Sprain. Usually, people rely on a doctor to tell them what is happening, but x-rays can be pretty expensive. With the soaring cost of health care, most people don’t get treated in hopes that they only have a sprain.

But if the pain from the impact turns out to be a fracture, they develop more significant issues. When you reach out to Batemans Bay Medical And Skin Centre, you take the initiative to take control of your health without burning a hole in your pocket.

Initial Treatment for Sprain or a Fracture

What is a Fracture? It is simply a broken bone. On the other hand, a Sprain is a ligament or tendon that has been stretched out or even torn. However, there are means to determine whether you are enduring a sprain or a fracture.

If you have injured your joint, and it is tricky to determine whether it is a severe problem, you can follow the physician's rule of thumb. Watch the injury and obey the RICE method for two and four days. What is the RICE method?

  • Rest – Avoid working the injured area as long as possible. If the pain is your ankle, try not to walk on it for at least two to four days.
  • Ice – Put ice on the area. Cover it with a pack and apply it to the injury. Leave the ice on for 15 minutes. Make a point of doing this throughout the day to ease the swelling and pain.
  • Compression – Cover your ankle with an ace bandage to secure joint stability. Compression with Straps can also help in decreasing the swelling.
  • Elevate – Elevate the damaged area at an angle that enables it to sit just above your heart. This will aid in reducing swelling.

Check the injured area after 2-4 days. If the pain is still difficult, you face troubles in the injured area, and you see bruising (black, blue, or purple) or blisters, you need immediate attention from the doctor.

Sprain - Signs and Indications

The symptoms of a sprain will vary depending on the injury's location and how severe it is. However, here are some common symptoms.

  • Pain around the injured area
  • Swelling around that area
  • Mild bruising
  • Limited scope of motion in the affected joint
  • At the time of injury, you may detect the sound of pop in a joint. If you do not, you will feel one.

Fractures

The signs of a fractured bone are not always obvious. Here are a few of the symptoms to look for if you face such severe injury:

  • Critical swelling over the top of a bone
  • Bruising over that area
  • Deformity in the injured part
  • Pain that increases while applying some pressure or due to movement.
  • Incapability to use the injured limb
  • Bone poking through the epidermis.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention?

Since it is difficult to know the difference between a fracture and a sprain, when should you consult a doctor? Let us help you out. If your symptoms are similar to any of the points given below, you should see the doctor immediately.

  • Not able to walk more than four steps, but the pain is bearable? You can watch the injury by the RICE method stated above.
  • Can't walk more than four steps without unbearable pain? You need to visit the emergency room.
  • Is the injured area numb or tingling? If it is so, you should seek emergency treatment.

Treatment For Fracture

Most sprains and fractures are cured conservatively, and surgery is not needed. In case of fracture, the injured area is covered with a Cast and a sprain with a Bandage.

The only time surgery is needed for a sprain is if the ligament or tendon is entirely torn.
