Care provided by a midwife

A team of midwives will provide the majority of your antenatal care. If you are in good health and have a low-risk pregnancy with no difficulties, this could be a suitable option for you.

Obstetric treatment (can be both public or private)

Women who require more complex treatment or have difficulties may be sent to an obstetrician. You may also choose obstetric treatment if you have private health insurance. One advantage is that you can select your doctor to give all of your pregnancy care.

What is Shared Care?

Shared Care entails splitting your Antenatal Care between your primary care physician and a hospital or birthing centre. If you already have a good relationship with your doctor and have a low-risk pregnancy, shared care could be a good option.

How does the practice of Shared Care work?

Most of your appointments will be with your primary care physician throughout your pregnancy, with a few at the hospital. Typically, 8-10 appointments with your GP are scheduled, with 3-4 visits to the hospital.

What are the advantages of Shared Maternity Care?

Some women prefer Shared Care because it allows them to receive most of their maternity care from a GP they know and who works close to their home or employment. It also means that the same doctor who cared for you during your pregnancy will be able to continue to care for you and your baby in the weeks and months following birth.

Suppose English is your first language preference, or whichever language is your first choice, your doctor may speak it as well and be more sensitive to your cultural needs. GPs are also equipped to deal with other pertinent issues, such as monitoring your mental health during pregnancy and postpartum and providing contraception. A few of the advantages are as follows:

  1. Continuity of treatment during and after your pregnancy
  2. More time to talk about your wants and worries
  3. Reduced wait time in a familiar GP setting
  4. Ongoing postnatal care for you, your infant, and the rest of the family
